Many factors come into the way in which we communicate with one another. Whether it’s the tone, the atmosphere, or the level in which you speak depending on the environment. This week a couple of classmates and I decided to experiment on how the level of noise in an environment effects the level in which people speak to one another. Our research began in the lobby of our school library in, The Brooklyn College campus. Because many students come in and out of the library between classes, there was a lot of movement and conversation between people. But, being that we were in this specific environment, it was much quieter compared to other places like the cafeteria where it is much louder and free for all to speak. We had two of our classmates talk to one another and measure their level of conversation. The noise level in the lobby of the school library was at about 50 to 60 and the level of conversation between classmates was between 70-75. I find that it is in our nature to follow along things whitout being completely aware. In this example, the two classmates were speaking to one another, suddenly there was a louder conversation or noise in the background which caused for them to speak a bit louder and continue their conversation. Finally, I believe that interesting interaction going on between two people may have some sort of influence on how much attention you’re giving and receiving.
